Gig Log: CJs at the Poly Room

I’m finally getting a chance to blog about CJs a week after the event. What a great event it was! Mahalo going out to Pepe Romero once again for letting us be a part of this event. CJs at the Poly Room was the night club located in the Poly Room back in the 80s. It is brought back 2 - 3 times a year with 70s, 80s, and early 90s music thanks to Pepe. A night club atmosphere with live entertainment for the older crowd.

We teamed up with Pepe to do lighting at this event. Here is what we came up with.

CJs Room

We used red, orange, and blue colors to surround and light up the areas to the left and the right of the stage, ceiling, as the stage itself. It was to give the overall feeling of being fully surrounded by light in that venue. Here is a picture of the dance floor from on the stage.

CJs Dancefloor

Overall there was very good feedback on this event. Mahalo for Pepe for throwing another fantastic CJ’s at the Poly Room and allowing us to join in on the fun.

Gig Log: UHH Prom

Last week Saturday we got to be a part of a unique UHH party. They held a prom themed party at Imiloa and what a great idea it was. As you get into college you always wonder what it would be like to go to prom again. If some people missed it, now it was their chance. Last event we were a part of at Imiloa was a wedding. Here is the set up we did.

Imiloa 1

It was a nicely designed set up, but we felt it was a little too dark in there. So for this event we added 10 more lights to the set up. This is how the set up looked.

UHH Prom 1

It was much brighter in there. They also added dimmers to the top lights the week of the prom event which helped with the visibility in the room. With the addition of the dimmers the Imiloa becomes an even better venue to hold a wedding or a prom at. Even though the blue walls are difficult to reflect lights off of, I still highly recommend this venue in East Hawaii. Gumby did another excellent job DJing too. Mahalo to the UHH SACC for doing a great job decorating and allow us to be a part of this prom themed party, we can’t wait to work with them again.

Gig Log: Poly Room Birthday

This past Friday we got the pleasure of being a part of a surprise birthday party at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Poly Room. The Poly Room is a fantastic venue for parties. It can be lit up really nicely. It is also not a very hard venue to light up. This kind of venue makes us light designers happy to work in. I like the fact that lights can be turned off or dimmed by sections. Many venues in Hilo don’t allow that. This is our set up that we did.

Poly Room 030312 D

We used a pinkish purple because that was the birthday girl’s favorite color. I balanced out the room with blue, which matches complimentary to the pinkish purple as well as preventing it from looking too feminine, since the crowd was mix gendered. Here is a look at the dance floor during the dancing with the lights dimmed more.

Poly Room 030312 A

Here is a look at the brand new moving washing in action. It added a nice element to the dance floor. It added a nice extra moving color splash around the room.

Poly Room 030312 B

Also what’s neat about this room is that it still have the disco ball connected to the ceiling from Breakwater Days. When we shinned the LED moving spot on it, it made a interested effect.

Poly Room 030312 E

Here is a look of the back of the DJ booth on stage. We added lights behind us to enhance the glow. There’s Gumby in action and DJ Stan, resident DJ for many years at Breakwater came back to hang out.

Poly Room 030312 C

I can’t say anything much bad about setting up in this venue. It’s a very good place. Now I know why the clubs lasted for so many years here.

Gig Log: Prom Fashion Show

This past Saturday Eclipse Effect Entertainment had the pleasure of providing the DJ and lighting services for the Prom Fashion Show at the Prince Kuhio Plaza. Many of the Prince Kuhio Plaza vendors showed off some of the latest fashion that students could get for prom which is just a couple weeks away. It was the first time we did lighting for a fashion show and I think we did well. This is how we lit up the runway.

Prom Fashion Show 2

We used blue uplighting on the back curtain. That curtain was black so I had to bounce the lighting off the crystals that hung down. We also unlighted the pillar and used our big gobo fixtures to light the hanging chandeliers and the models walking from the entrance. We also had spots in the back of the audience to light the front of the stage. This is how it looked when the models walked in.

Prom Fashion Show 1

I think it turned out great for our first time lighting up a runway and can’t wait to do lighting for another fashion show. I have other ideas.

Gig Log: Wedding at Wailoa State Park Big Pavillion

This past Saturday Eclipse Effect Mobile Disco was lucky to be a part of Nerick’s and Kris’s Wedding reception. What made this wedding reception challenging was that I had to work with new DJs that I was not used to working with, but I knew it would turn out well due to these DJs being experienced. It just was a little bit more work getting everyone on the same page. Also Wailoa State Park big pavilion does not hold lighting very well with the pavilion being open from all sides and providing practically no walls to light up. Only washes work in this venue. Washes are a splash of color and light on the cake and on the dance floor. Here is a picture of the lighting on the dance floor, uplighting on the pillars, and lighting on the banner above the stage.

N Wedding Set Up

Here is the head table. I splashed the table with the wedding colors of white and red. I also lit up the cake that was located behind the head table.

N Wedding First Dance

DJ LX from Maui flew in and mixed during the dancing part.

N Wedding Dancing

This is a very challenging venue to hold weddings in, but in all I think the night turned out well. I just couldn’t light it up the place the usual way due to the limitations caused by how the venue is built.

Gig Log: Last gig of 2011

Yesterday we did our last wedding for 2011. 2011 was a great year for us with and we’re thankful to the people that trust us be a part of their big days. We took care of both the ceremony and reception. For the ceremony we used our Bose PA system for the first time. It worked amazingly well and did cover the 150 people easily in the open yard area.

123011 Ceremony Bose

The reception took place in the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel Ballroom. I was excited to get into this room and try to design the lighting because it is already a very nice room and we could take advantage of the lighting in the room already.

IMG_1814

A lot of venue do not allow the lights to be dimmed. This one could. The bride wanted a neutral color for uplighting. I was given the choices of yellow or orange. Not many choices for a room with dark brown wood walls. Usually colors like purple or blue do very well in this room. The yellow did not show well on the wood and the orange color made the room look like an old dingy restaurant. I accidentally used white to uplight this room and it worked. Once it was okayed by the bride we made it work. This is the first time we used white to uplight a room.

A great way to end the year. Congrats to Hayden and Elyse on their marriage! Mahalo for the opportunity to close the year off working with a great couple.

Gig Log: Hale Anuenue Christmas Party

This past Monday we had the pleasure of being part of the Christmas party for the hard working staff at Hale Anuenue. It was the 2nd event we did at the Hilo Yacht Club as the reformed Eclipse Effect Mobile Disco. Here is the picture of our set up for the night.

Christmas Party 122411 B

I used the colors blue and white to simulate ice. We also did red and green on the wreaths. We also tested out the snow gobo which did an awesome job covering the other parts of the room.

Christmas Party Snow Gobo

We didn’t expect the crowd to be this good and dance till the very end like the end since there was no alcohol served at this event, but they actually partied pretty hard.

Christmas Party 2

Mahalo to the staff of Hale Anuenue for making us part of their awesome Christmas Party.

Gig Log: 11/11/11 Wedding Reception

11/11/11 is a big day for weddings, for most part due to it being easy to remember the day. Thank you to Chris and Enjoli for letting us be a part of their big day. The wedding reception took place at the Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo. We were set up in the big conference room which proved to be the most challenging event yet. Mostly because the walls and carpet were blue.

IMG_1800

The way the room is set up it absorbs light. I tested out the lighting and blue is the best color to light up this room. Magenta and purple also works pretty well since it’s on the same color spectrum as blue. The ceiling we could not design due to it being pipes. Also there are 5 inches between a cramped stage so this created a lot of trouble lighting up behind the wedding party. I couldn’t get the angle that I wanted behind the wedding party, but with some creativity I got it to work. This is what we came up with in the end.

111111Gig

The event didn’t look exactly how we would have liked to on the lighting part, but in the end we learned from this set up and the event ran very smoothly. I have great ideas for our next set up so I can’t wait for our next event here. Also I noticed the disco lights do look good on the walls of this room.

Gig Log: UHH Pajama Party

This past Friday we were lucky to be party of the Students Activities Council Pajama Party at the UHH Sudexo. It’s been a while since we did a gig in that venue. It’s a nice big venue with high ceilings. It’s a little challenging to do uplighting in there. The walls are grey so it doesn’t reflect very well. We used blue uplighting for this pajama dance party to give the Sudexo a night time effect. The blue doesn’t overwhelm the room with light, yet it lights up the place well enough to see what you are doing. Another challenge with the uplighting was to uplight the place without making it look too classy since the dress code was pajamas. This is what we did.

UHH Pajama Party 5

We uplit the pillars to give the room a soft blue glow. This also allows people walking by from outside to see the lighting as they passed. This hopefully would peak their interest. We also did our truss set up with lighting design on the ceiling, both side walls of the room, and floor to fully emerse the people on the dance floor.

UHH Pajama Party 1

We had a projector screen behind us so we uplight that and used it to our advantage to reflect the back lighting.

UHH Pajama Party 6

It turned out to be a very good crowd. I forgot how crazy college events get and there were more people then I expected. 180 students joined us that night.

UHH Pajama Party 7

A job well done to David Lau, one of the main planners of this event and his first planned event with the Students Activities Council for UHH. We’re looking forward to more great events with UHH Students Activities Council.

Mark and Meagan's Wedding

Two Sundays ago the Eclipse Effect Mobile Disco crew did our first gig at Mauna Lani. It was a wedding reception at the Canoe House Restaurant on the grounds of the Mauna Lani Hotel. It was a challenge in this area because it was an area wedged between bungalows where guests pay $3,000 a night and their ocean view hotel guests. So the noise levels had to be monitored carefully. Here is the set up we did. It was a hefty set up process, but when you have this view, it makes things very calming.

IMG_1678

There was a gazebo where the wedding party was going to be held in. The moment I saw that I though that would be an amazing place to light up. This is how it looked at night.

IMG_1689

We also threw up uplighting on the trees near the entrance to give an added effect of being surrounded by lighting design. We also splashed the dance floor with a white light so the couple could be seen by the video and pictures well during the first dance. Then the rest of the night the dance floor had the water effect light to add elegance. We also splashed the wedding cake with blue lighting.

Canoe House Cake

In all it was a great event and I was happy with the end results. Best of all there was no noise complaints. :)

Marlon and Lori's Wedding

This Saturday we were part of a wedding at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Congratulations to Marlon and Lori. The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel has a nice large ceremony area right outside of the Moku’ola Ballroom.

IMG_1674

The reception was held inside the Moku’ola Ballroom. It’s a pretty big room, with low ceilings. It was a challenge to light this place up since it is required to have lights on at each end of the room, but this is what we came up with.

IMG_1675

We put uplights around the pillars nearest the head table. We put lime colored uprights behind the head table and pink lighting under the head table. We washed the ceiling with the H20 light and shinned the moving head lights at the head table with lime colored stars. As you probably noticed the wedding colors were pink and lime. We also washed the dance floor with our light bars to have enough light for the video and photos of all the reception activities. Here is our DJ booth set up.

IMG_1677

Once again congratulations to Marlon and Lori, and thank you for making us part of your specials day.

Gig Log: Kolu and Jewel's Wedding

This weekend we were a part of Kolu and Jewel’s special day. A wedding reception held at Wailoa State Park big pavilion. Not a place commonly used for weddings, but the bride and groom had the right idea. The wanted a place where they didn’t have to pay hotel prices for drinks and a place where they could let loose and have a good time without limits. This was the perfect venue for that. This was an unconventional wedding and nothing like what we’ve been a part of before, but it was tons of fun. First the bride cut the cake with a machete. Then the wedding party all were part of a beer chugging contest. I think the most challenging part of this event was trying to make the Wailoa State Park pavilion look nice. This is what we did with the lighting:

IMG_1611

Purple was the theme. So I lit up the cake, hanging center piece, and heart decoration win a purple wash. This area of the pavilion is normally dark and without uplighting, the heart would decoration would be in the dark at night.

IMG_1615

Here is another view of the lit up heart.

IMG_1612

Here is the wedding cake with a soft wash of purple light. I think overall uplighting made a big difference in this wedding because of how dark some spots are around the pavilion. Overall another memorable wedding, not only for the bride and groom, but for us too.

Gig Log: Ginger's Sweet 16 at the Yacht Club

This will be my first installment of a gig log. We will be doing gig logs in video of almost every event we are able to video from now on. Unfortunately for this event I didn’t get a chance to take video or pictures. This is the first event in a long time that I did myself from beginning to end. Ginger’s Sweet 16 took place this Saturday at the Hilo Yacht Club. This is a nice venue, but I notice every time I do gigs in inside event room, I was always told to turn down the music. This is because they do not want to bother the members having dinner in the next room. Their rooms are also divided by dividers that are not very thick. This time they had me turning the music and the bass down very low. For this birthday party I tested out some uplighting behind the DJ area. Behind the DJ booth was a window that looked out into the ocean and the uplighting added a very nice glow to the area. I highly recommend uplighting at Yacht Club events. Overall I was very happy with the outcome of Ginger’s Sweet 16 party. As for throwing parties at the Yacht Club, if you don’t mind having the music during the DJ portion low, then it’s a good place to throw a party. It’s a nice place, but the volume could be an issue.
